Blizzard Surprise-Launches New Warcraft 3 Campaign and Confirms StarCraft Revival

Forsaken Kingdom drops alongside a free Update 3.0 overhaul for Warcraft III: Reforged, while the studio also reveals that StarCraft is officially coming back.

Warcraft-style fantasy warriors clash on one side while futuristic StarCraft-inspired soldiers and alien forces battle on the other, representing Blizzard’s new Warcraft 3 campaign and confirmed StarCraft revival.

Warcraft III Receives Its First Story Campaign in Over Two Decades

Blizzard opened BlizzCon 2026 with an unexpected RTS revival, shadow-dropping Warcraft III Reforged: Forsaken Kingdom during the opening ceremony. The release marks the first brand-new, official single-player story campaign added to Warcraft III in over 20 years, as well as Blizzard's first single-player RTS campaign content since 2016's StarCraft II: Nova Covert Ops.

Forsaken Kingdom puts players in control of Sylvanas Windrunner during a pivotal transitional era in Azeroth's history, chronicling the catastrophic fall of Lordaeron and the establishment of the Undercity. The expansion begins with a standalone prologue mission titled 'Last Days of Lordaeron' followed by three full narrative chapters. It also introduces a new neutral Forsaken Paladin hero unit to the game's tactical sandbox.

Update 3.0 Brings Visual Overhauls and Mapmaker Upgrades

Alongside the paid expansion, Blizzard deployed Update 3.0 as a free patch for all existing owners of Warcraft III: Reforged. The update introduces refreshed graphics modes and fine-tuned visual settings aimed at improving readability and asset fidelity across both standard and Reforged aesthetics.

For the custom game community, Update 3.0 includes a heavily revamped World Editor. The updated suite expands mapmaking capabilities, offering custom campaign creators improved scripting toolsets and asset pipelines to build complex scenarios inside the modern Reforged client.

Connecting Classic RTS Lore to World of Warcraft: Forever

Beyond serving as standalone RTS strategy content, Forsaken Kingdom acts as a direct narrative bridge to Blizzard's next major MMO milestone, World of Warcraft: Forever. The story beats in the new campaign establish the regional factions, political fallout, and world state that lead directly into the beginning era explored by the upcoming game.

Blizzard confirmed during the showcase that World of Warcraft: Forever its beta begins on September 17, 2026 shortly, launching beta access on September 17, 2026, ahead of a worldwide commercial release on November 4, 2026.

Platform Availability and Purchasing Options

Warcraft III Reforged: Forsaken Kingdom is sold separately for $30 on Battle.net and requires Warcraft III: Reforged. For players wanting to access broader franchise releases, Blizzard has also bundled the campaign within the limited-time Warcraft Forever Collection.

For PC players who access Warcraft III: Reforged through Xbox Game Pass, the base game catalog inclusion grants immediate access to the free Update 3.0 engine enhancements and World Editor improvements. However, playing the new Forsaken Kingdom narrative campaign requires purchasing the expansion separately or securing it via the collection bundle on Battle.net.

StarCraft Universe Confirmed for Long-Awaited Return

Capping off the strategy showcases, Blizzard officially announced STARCRAFT, a new open-world shooter set in the sci-fi universe. The game is currently scheduled to launch in Spring 2030, marking the franchise’s first major new installment in years.

Blizzard did not announce specific platforms during the Opening Ceremony, and gameplay details remain limited for now. The reveal focused on establishing the project’s direction and its return to the Koprulu Sector.
