Riot Games Ending Active Development on 2XKO in December 2026
Servers and online matchmaking will remain active on PC and consoles as Riot issues full refunds, unlocks all champions, and preps a final content roadmap.

Active Updates Ceasing After 2026
Riot Games has announced that active development on its 2v2 fighting game 2XKO will conclude in December 2026. The decision marks an abrupt transition for the League of Legends spin-off less than a year after its official multiplatform launch.
Crucially, Riot confirmed that this change is not an immediate server shutdown. 2XKO will remain online and fully playable across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S beyond 2026, allowing players to continue queueing for online matches and accessing local offline modes.
Sustainability and Engagement Pressures
According to Riot, the move stems from unsustainable operating costs coupled with flat user engagement. Despite frequent post-launch patches and competitive balance passes, active player retention failed to meet internal targets required to support long-term live-service production.
The writing had appeared on the wall earlier in the year. Industry outlets previously reported that Riot downsized a substantial portion of the 2XKO development team roughly three weeks after its full January 2026 launch, following an initial PC early access rollout in late 2025.
Full Purchase Refunds and Champion Unlocks
In an unusual move for live-service sunsets, Riot is issuing complete, automatic refunds for any real-money purchases made on or before August 20, 2026. Players will not lose access to their cosmetics or account progress after receiving these refunds.
To ensure the existing community can enjoy the full experience, Riot is also unlocking the entire champion roster for all players and bundling the majority of cosmetic items directly into the game.
Feature Streamlining and the Final Roadmap
Alongside the monetization rollback, 2XKO is streamlining its multiplayer infrastructure. Riot is removing ranked lobbies, Battle Passes, KO Points, Champion Tokens, and scheduled live-service events. Instead, matchmaking will pivot to a single unified casual queue that preserves hidden skill-based matchmaking to keep matches fair.
Before active support ends, Riot plans to deliver on its remaining content commitments. The two previously revealed champions, Lux and Samira, are still scheduled to arrive in a final major content patch around October 2026.
A final maintenance and balance patch will follow in December 2026 to resolve lingering bugs and stabilize the sandbox before the team formally steps away.
