The Witcher 3 Remastered Skips Switch 1 for Native Switch 2 Launch
CD Projekt Red confirms its revamped RPG arrives September 29 with a native next-gen Nintendo port and a free upgrade path for current Switch owners.

Geralt's Next-Gen Return Sets Date
CD Projekt Red officially unveiled The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered at Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026, locking in a release date of September 29, 2026. The upgraded edition is headed to PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Battle.net, and Nintendo Switch 2.
Crucially for handheld enthusiasts, the Nintendo Switch 2 release will run as a fully native application rather than relying on cloud streaming. This native commitment underscores CD Projekt Red's strategy to leverage the next-generation Nintendo platform directly on device.
Switch 1 Stays Behind With a Free Path Forward
The original Nintendo Switch hardware will not receive the remaster's visual overhaul, mechanical revisions, or standalone free DLC promotions. The aging 2017 hybrid console remains locked to its previous software build.
Existing Switch owners are not being left out in the cold, however. Anyone who owns The Witcher 3 on original Switch hardware is eligible to claim the native Nintendo Switch 2 Remastered edition entirely for free when transitioning to the new system, mirroring the free upgrade path provided across PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
Overhauled Mechanics and Next-Gen Demands
The Remastered package bundles the complete base game alongside the Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine expansions. Players can expect revamped skill trees, refined combat and traversal systems, smarter monster behaviors, a dedicated transmog system, and expanded photo mode capabilities.
Bypassing the original Switch highlights the technical cost of these modernizations. While the 2019 port relied on extreme compromises to fit original hardware, delivering these expanded gameplay systems alongside richer visual pipelines requires the higher compute thresholds and memory bandwidth expected from Switch 2.
Paving the Path to The Witcher 4
The September remaster launch is the opening salvo in an aggressive multi-year roadmap for the franchise. CD Projekt Red plans to release a brand-new expansion for The Witcher 3, titled Songs of the Past, in 2027.
That content bridge will lead directly into the studio's next mainline chapter, with The Witcher 4 currently targeting a 2028 release window.
