The Witcher 3 Remastered Launches September 29 With Free Upgrades and New 2027 DLC

CD Projekt Red revamps Geralt's journey with combat overhauls, free expansion rollouts, and a new story chapter arriving next year.

White-haired monster hunter and allies prepare for battle in a dark fantasy landscape, representing The Witcher 3 Remastered launch and upcoming 2027 DLC.

Geralt Returns for an Overhauled Adventure

CD Projekt Red officially unveiled The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered on August 25, 2026, during Gamescom Opening Night Live. The updated edition of the acclaimed 2015 role-playing game is set to launch worldwide on September 29, 2026.

The release targets PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC across Steam, GOG, the Epic Games Store, and Battle.net. Rather than a ground-up remake in a new engine, the release delivers a substantial overhaul built on REDengine, modernizing mechanics and visuals ahead of the franchise's next mainline chapter.

Upgrade Eligibility and Storefront Details

Players who already own The Witcher 3 on PC, PlayStation 5, or Xbox Series X|S can download the Remastered edition as a free upgrade on launch day. CD Projekt Red has maintained a player-first model for modern hardware, granting access across storefronts without mandatory re-purchases.

On Nintendo hardware, digital owners of the original Switch release will be able to claim the Nintendo Switch 2 edition for free via the eShop. However, CD Projekt Red has not yet clarified how or if physical cartridge owners will be able to upgrade.

Mechanical Upgrades and Quality-of-Life Systems

The Remastered edition introduces significant gameplay revisions alongside its graphical updates. CD Projekt Red has implemented a newly revamped skill tree, refined monster behaviors, and updated combat mechanics accompanied by new finisher animations.

  • A dedicated armor transmogrification system allowing visual customization without sacrificing gear stats.
  • Reworked traversal and mount handling to improve Roach's pathfinding and responsiveness.
  • Streamlined inventory management tools to reduce menu friction during lengthy campaigns.

Expansion Bundles and the Road to 2027

The remaster packages the base game alongside its major legacy add-ons, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. In tandem with the announcement, CD Projekt Red made both expansions immediately free to existing base game owners across supported platforms.

Looking ahead, the studio confirmed a third full story expansion titled 'Songs of the Past.' Set in the rural region of Letten, the expansion is scheduled to launch in 2027. Additionally, the RPG's debut on Battle.net includes a crossover promotion that unlocks a Geralt-themed skin for Diablo 4.
